Understanding Others: Everyday counselling techniques.

This eLearning course is an introduction to essential counselling skills in a work setting. It is for anyone looking to develop and enhance their counselling skills to improve how they relate and communicate with others, and to feel confident about supporting people they work with. 

What's included? 

In this interactive and engaging eLearning, you’ll be introduced to key counselling concepts and skills, including active listening, open questions, curiosity, reflexivity and collaborative goal setting. You will watch a series of scenarios which demonstrate how to apply these skills in a work setting.   

At the end of each topic there are downloadable resources that include a summary of the learning and practical tool-sheets. 

How long is it? 

There are six topics. Each topic takes anything from 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on how much time you take to reflect and practise what you have learnt. 

Certificate 

By completing/passing this course, you will attain a Relate CPD certificate.

1. Skills of the supportive role 

We’ll guide you through best practice for starting any supporting relationship and demonstrate one of the most essential communication skills in counselling - active listening. 

  • Establish a clear and safe start with people you support 

  • Set out the scope and boundaries of your role 

  • Recognise how active listening skills can help you in your work 

2. Getting to know the self and others  

You’ll get the opportunity to think about your personal attributes and the beliefs of others, and the impact of this dynamic on the supportive relationship. 

  • Think about your strengths; how you see yourself and how others might see you 

  • Learn about the concept of 'life positions' and how they might influence the way you support others  

3. Systemic ideas 

You’ll be introduced to systemic theories that seek to explain the wider influences on our feelings and behaviours. You’ll learn how curiosity and reflexivity can help you to have better supportive conversations. 

  • Learn that we are all part of many different systems 

  • Explore about how values and beliefs influence feelings and behaviours 

  • How to get curious and use reflexivity to bring a new dimension to your conversations 

4. Change, transition and loss 

You’ll learn about the change journey, loss cycle and coping strategies that people use to deal with emotional changes in their life, and how to better understand and support them.   

  • Recognise what the different stages of the change journey are in relation to emotion 

  • Explore different types of scoping strategies including “skating on ice” 

  • Identify strengths and resources to use for yourself and others 

5. Identifying and setting goals 

This topic introduces some key collaborative goal setting models that will help you to support change with others. 

  • Recognise different goal setting models and techniques 

  • Identify which models to use in order to set achievable goals with others 

  • Recognise the skills involved to support decision making using different goal setting models 

 6. Endings 

The final topic covers the key factors involved in ending supportive relationships well and the importance of self-care. 

  • Identify what key factors are involved when ending supportive relationship 

  • Explore best practice methods to suit different styles of ending 

  • Recognise the importance of self-care
